Tybee Island in the New year
Standing on the beach in the dark with a breeze blowing around listening to Savannah say “Here. Just build me a house right here”. It reminded me just how magical the ocean is, at any time.
Some people believe in ghosts, magic, religion… Everyone's beliefs can cause good or they can cause harm. I don’t have a lot of beliefs, primarily in being a good person but also, I feel as though the one superstition I truly have goes towards New Years Day.
Growing up and even currently, I feel a correlation on what happens on the first day of a new year goes into the rest of the year. What you find yourself doing on it, you will at some point continue to be doing it.
On the first day of the year, after sleeping in (which I very much have been doing this year), we took a small stroll to a geocache. Finding a little pill bottle to sign our name and replace a tiny figurine with a sticker.
If you’re a fan of treasure hunting, geocaching is something you should look into.
We didn’t leave Bluffton that day. Just had a relaxing day. I published something on the blog to try to keep myself accountable and able to work the entire year…we all know how that’s going. The next day we planned to meet our friend from Georgia on Tybee Island, just outside of Savannah, Ga.
Growing up I knew almost nothing about the East Coast, we did Florida vacations occasionally but if we weren’t driving to it then we weren’t going. I remember the first time I went to South carolina. The oceans have a different feel than that of the gulf or the west coast. Still crowded during warm weather, but also it seems more peaceful.
Being Windy and Cold on the day we ended up on Tybee, it was definitely not crowded. Still you saw people fishing, taking strolls, and enjoying the ocean breeze.
We walked down the pier just taking things in and people watching, or in my case trying to photograph the birds. A few people were fishing off the edge and none of the outside shops were open but that was expected. A stroll does wonders for the soul though.
After taking our stroll we stopped at a community art gallery and admired the local artist's work and learning about how that gallery was run.I must say that they have some very good artists in the area.
Then we headed to the restaurant we had picked out for our dinner meet up.The one thing that was kept in mind was that she was bringing her child with her. So Tony suggested we meet at the Crab Shack because “kids love live gators”. I’m fairly certain he was right
It was a different experience for me. The Crab Shack was definitely unique with all of the stray cats having free reign of outside, and even a house specifically built just for them with heaters and all. We walked around the outside before actually going for a table.
I do believe that the Gators were the favorite of many children to come and go, so I commend Tony for his choice of location. The gators, however, I’m not sure if they enjoy it or not but mostly I think they’re used to it.
We sat outside that night on the patio with the outdoor heaters overlooking the water, with the cats roaming around for dropped food. I loved it. The food was amazing too. We must’ve spent 2 or 3 hours on that patio, just chatting away and eating our food and having just a few drinks.
Before leaving we made sure to get a group photo before heading on our way to just go stand on the oceanfront and hear those words that I stated before.
I believe you can find magic anywhere, at any time. Even in the windy very cold dark sandy ocean. Sometimes you just need to look through someone else’s eyes.
